Obituary for Thomas P. Cotter

Thomas Patrick Cotter born to John and Johanna (nee Vaughn) Cotter on March 18, 1929 at the Cotter homestead in Montello Wisconsin. Thomas graduated from Montello High School. In August of 1951 Thomas received a try out for the Philadelphia Athletics at old Comiskey Park versus the Chicago White Sox. Thomas placed his major league baseball career on hold as he was drafted by the United States Marine Corps serving from 1951-1953. After returning from his combat tour on Korean Peninsula, Thomas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. While studying at UW-Oshkosh he met Mary Lou Haverty. Thomas and Mary Lou married in Oshkosh on June 11, 1955. Thomas began his teaching and coaching career at Stratford High School. Thomas received his Masters Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While working on his Doctoral Degree at the University of Missouri he received his guidance counselor certification in 1960. Thomas accepted the position of Guidance Counselor at East Troy High School in 1961. Thomas never worked a day in his life as he went to school for the next 30 years.

While raising their 5 children, Thomas and Mary Lou immersed themselves in the East Troy community. Thomas served as a Village of East Troy Board Member for 17 years, volunteered with numerous civic organizations, frequently worked on the square during various Chamber of Commerce Events, and was a proud member of St. Peter’s Parish. Upon his retirement from the school district he continued his community involvement with the Walworth County Civil Service Committee retiring in June of 2018. Thomas proudly handed out “I Voted Stickers” for many years as an election poll worker.

A life long sports enthusiast, Thomas umpired and refereed many High School and recreational baseball and basketball games. During his retirement, Thomas enjoyed golfing with the Good Guys Golf Group and the Tuesday Night Men’s League at Evergreen Golf Club. He also enjoyed working the scoreboard for the East Troy High School football team.

Thomas and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling throughout the world while often assisting their clients from the Vacation Station and Travel Time travel agencies. They also enjoyed spending time in Montello during breaks from the school year. Thomas truly loved people and valued all of his many friendships.

He is survived by his sister Annabelle Jack, three daughters Elizabeth (Robert) Entwistle, Catherine Cotter, Margaret (Patrick) Kennedy and one son Michael (Julie) Cotter. Also survived by 9 grandchildren: Johanna Entwistle, Robert (Lauren) Entwistle, Claire (Ben) Bray, Brianna Entwistle, Audrey Entwistle, Shane Kennedy, Blair Kennedy, Fallon Kennedy, Thomas Cotter, and 1 great grandchild, Eleanor Bray. Thomas was preceded in death by his Parents, his infant sister Patricia, his beloved wife of 43 years Mary Lou (nee Haverty) Cotter, and his eldest son, John Cotter.

Visitation with the family will occur Friday, June 14 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Legacy Funeral Services in East Troy, Wisconsin. Services to be held on Saturday, June 15th at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in East Troy. 11:00 a.m. visitation 12:00 p.m. Mass. Internment at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Montello, Wisconsin will follow at approximately 3:00-3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cotter Memorial Athletic Fund of St. Peter’s School will be used to help rebuild a community baseball diamond honoring our Dad’s love of the game.
